NEAR-INFRARED DYES IN HIGH TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS
by Dr. U. Resch-Genger, BAM, Berlin (Germany)

On September 24 to 27, 1997, a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Syntheses, Optical Properties, and Applications of Near- Infrared (NIR) Dyes in High Technology Fields" was held in Trest, Czech Republic. The book "Near-Infrared Dyes for High Technology Applications" edited by S. Daehne, U. Resch-Genger, and O.S. Wolfbeis (NATO ASI SERIES 3-52) provides an excellent overview of the recent developments in NIR dye synthesis and NIR laser techniques and their many different applications in high technology areas such as optical recording and non linear optics as well as tumour therapy, clinical chemistry, cytology, sensor technology, and analytical chemistry. Of particular interest is the combination of high technology developments and applications as well as the broad variety of research fields presented. Advances in molecular engineering of NIR dyes as well as laser techniques and instrumentation are discussed in combination with straightforward applications such as ultrasensitive detection of NIR fluorescent labels with diode lasers in cytology and clinical chemistry, DNA analysis and immunoassay technology, pH and ion sensing and optical information recording.
Reference books: 3-52
