NUCLEAR SHAPES AND NUCLEAR STRUCTURE AT LOW EXCITATION ENERGIES
by Dr. M. Vergnes and Dr. J. Sauvage, Institut de Physique Nucleaire, Orsay (France) Dr. P.H. Heenen, Universite libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), and Dr. H.T. Duong, Laboratoire Aime Cotton, Orsay (France)

The present volume (NATO ASI SERIES B289) contains Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on contemporary problems related to nuclear shapes, held at Cargese (France) in June 1991. The workshop was organized in order to include both experimental and theoretical studies all providing new information about nuclear shapes. A broad range of topics has been covered, with substantial contributions in the field of atomic physics. The book has been divided into eleven chapters:

_Introduction
_Atomic Methods in Nuclear Spectroscopy
_Single-Particle Aspect
_Multiphonon states
_Shapes and Coexistence
_Octupoles
_Superdeformation
_Exotic Nuclei
_Chaos
_Experimental technique
_Conclusion

Two specific features of this book should be noted. First, it purposfully includes a large number of pedagogical presentations of recent results. Second, it presents a very good balance between theoretical and experimental aspects for the majority of topics.

We believe that this book will be very useful for anyone interested in Nuclear Structure.
