LINKING THE GASEOUS AND CONDENSED PHASES OF MATTER: THE BEHAVIOR OF SLOW ELECTRONS
by Dr. W.F. Schmidt, Hahn_Meitner_Institut, Berlin (Germany)

An Advanced Study Institute on the properties of electrons in all three phases of matter was held at Patras, Greece, from Sept. 5 _ 18, 1993. The meeting focussed on the change of the energetics and dynamics of electrons when the number density is increased from that of a dilute gas to that of a liquid or a solid. The meeting at Patras brought together some of the world's foremost experts who work in the field of electronic properties of gases, clusters, liquids, and solids. The lectures presented focussed on the behavior of slow electrons in matter. Slow electrons are especially appropriate in the study of the influence of density changes and structure. A wide range of elementary excitations and reactions was discussed. The results of these deliberations are summarized in the volume under review (NATO ASI SERIES B326). It is divided into nine chapters which treat the following topics: interaction of slow electrons with atoms or molecules as a function of state; ionization by radiation in dilute and condensed matter; elementary processes induced by photons or electrons in clusters; electron mobility, electron attachment, and electron_ion recombination in gases and liquids; electron transfer at interfaces; applications. In addition, discussion groups and poster sessions took place. Summaries of these activities are included. The material compiled in this volume gives an excellent overview of the activities in this truly interdisciplinary field. It represents a reference book for the graduate student and the researcher and it will guide and accelerate further studies in this important area.
