OPTICS AT THE NANOMETER SCALE: IMAGING AND STORING WITH PHOTONIC NEAR FIELDS
by Professor M. Nieto-Vesperinas, University of California, Irvine (U.S.A.)

This volume (NATO ASI SERIES E319) provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in near field optics. It provides articles with both a theoretical background and the latest experimental techniques. As such, it provides the fundamentals of both illumination and collection modes, role of evanescent waves and their detection, resonances, and the newest techniques that allow super resolution down to the scale of a few nanometers, such as apertureless scanning near field microscopy, and fluorescence of molecules.

The book is timely in this active and fast-developing subject. It provides a way towards envisaging the storing of information at the nanometer scale. There are so far not many texts devoted to this field, and the reader can find complementary information in previous published volumes in this same series such as: "Near field Optics" by Courjon and Pohl and "Photons and Local Probes" by Marti and Moller. There can be no doubt that this book should stimulate work in both storing optical information and reconstructing structures with non-destructive methods.
