TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION IN SCHOOL AND INDUSTRY
by Professor D. Blandow, World Council of Associations for Technology Education, Erfurt (Germany)

This book (NATO ASI SERIES F135) is based on the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Prague, Czech Republic, and Poprad, Slovak Republic from 15 to 22 August, 1993.

At a time when almost anything substantially existent is technically creatable, the means of advancing and facilitating technological capabilities are being pursued with even more zeal than the actual hunt for new technological achievements _ at least by most far_seeing nations. In comparison to natural resources, it is a nation's human resources and their combined capabilitiy that are almost infinite. The development of these capacities was the impetus for this workshop.

The supportive nature of the book aims at the development of integrated learning situations suitable for secondary schools and teacher education, as well as for university_level technology and engineering programmes.

Much of the workshop's content involved the term `didactics'. Didactics relate to the scientific discipline involved in the principles and laws of teaching and is closely connected with the structure of the subject being taught. These structures of subjects and their didactic simplification for teaching purposes are a key function of didactics. To ascertain the tendencies in didactics, as well as in the technical fields, the consequences of employing advanced technology for educational purposes also raises questions about advanced technology's role in education.

New didactic concepts for developing key qualifications through technology education, and programmes using advanced educational technology in innovative integrative situations are assessed from educational, technological, engineering, and management perspectives.
